GOP Rep. Mike Coffman is running against Democratic contender Joe Miklosi.

Many people running for office have tried to convince voters by enlisting the help of family.

In this case, Congressman Mike Coffman appears in a new commercial about Medicare with his mother.

CLAIM: Coffman is working to protect every nickel of Medicare

We're labeling this as "debatable."

His most telling vote on Medicare is a 2012 "yes" vote on the Ryan Budget Bill. The plan passed the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, but it died in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Under the plan, in 2022 people 65 and older would get money that would go toward private health insurance. They could also use that money to pay into the current Medicare system.

President Obama has said this plan will end Medicare as we know it. The GOP argues it would save or protect the Medicare system for future generations.

The current Budget Resolution proposed by Paul Ryan allows Medicare recipients to opt to keep the current system indefinitely, but that is not the plan for which Mike Coffman voted.

The Bottom line: Both parties agree Medicare spending is growing too fast. Whether Coffman is actually protecting Medicare by advocating for a premium support system, is up for debate.

**EDITOR'S NOTE:The original story is updated to reflect a change from 2011 to 2012 on Coffman's "most telling" vote on the Ryan Budget Bill. Coffman voted for two Ryan budgets, one in 2011 and 2012. The 2012 version of the bill kept the option to pay into the traditional Medicare system. **
