A combination of different heights in clouds not only brings a contrast of colors but also allows the viewer to see the structures of the base of the clouds.
Low clouds just before sunset will turn red first. The sinking sun will light the clouds from below, and often the most beautiful colors can appear up to half an hour later.
It is during this time that high clouds will gradually change into deep red and become apparent under the darken background of lower level clouds. The lower clouds will display rays from the sun as well as shadows, outlining the clouds structure.
More wonderful sunsets await you, so keep that camera handy, and send in your pictures.
