The Pueblo Chieftain reports Police Chief Luis Velez said Wednesday that 21-year-old Christopher Tavares was believed to have been armed with a .40-caliber handgun recovered from the area.

Before Tavares was shot early Tuesday, he was suspected of shooting and wounding an officer who was pursuing a car he was in.

Police say 22-year-old Marquis Robinson also was believed to be in the car. He was arrested on suspicion of eluding and resisting arrest. He is free on a $25,000 bond. A person who answered his phone number said he wasn't available to comment.
