KUSA - Canine flu is something pet owners need to be aware of all year long.

Veterinarian Wendy Hauser says while it hasn't been around all that long, and it is something dog owners need to take seriously-especially if you board your dogs or take them to the groomers.

A new study out of Colorado State University identified Colorado as one of just two states that are considered hot zones for dog flu.

New York is the other hot zone.

Dr. Hauser says the best thing you can do for your dog is get them vaccinated.

The vaccine comes in two booster shots, given a few weeks apart.

However, she says if you're planning to board you dog for Presidents day weekend - getting that first booster will still provide them with a little immunity.
