KUSA - Deadlines are fast approaching for college students to apply for federal aid for the fall semester, and there is a change this year in how tax returns are calculated into the online application.
This year, an IRS data-retrieval tool is part of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid - also known as FAFSA. When applying for aid for the upcoming fall semester, students must have their 2012 taxes completed and filed to use this tool. Misti Ruthven, with the Colorado Department of Education, says a copy of a tax return can no longer be given to colleges and universities as part of the FAFSA application.
Ruthven says the most common deadline colleges have to receive the FAFSA is March 1.
This FAFSA form must be completed for a student to receive any type of financial aid, including grants, work study, student loans and even many scholarships. The Colorado Department of Education is helping students navigate through this sometimes complicated process.
On Feb. 10, financial aid administrators are offering free one-on-one help to Colorado families applying for financial aid. "College Goal Sunday" will be held at 16 locations along the Front Range from 1 to 3 p.m. At the end of the session, students should know how much federal financial aid is available to them. In addition, more than $20,000 in scholarships will be given away that day.
