DENVER - Denver police say they have arrested a 30-year-old Aurora school teacher in connection to a hit-and-run crash on Colfax Avenue Wednesday morning.

The woman, Erin Jackson, turned herself into authorities Thursday morning.

Jackson is a 5th grade teacher at AXL Academy, a charter school in Aurora. She has been with the school for eight months.

The school said in a statement released late Thursday they were "shocked" to hear about Jackson's alleged involvement in the incident.

"We are keeping the victim in our thoughts and prayers and wish her a full recovery. At this time, our top priority is supporting our students as they learn of this sad news," the statement read.

The school has not said whether Jackson was in class Wednesday morning after the crash.

Jackson is accused of striking a East High School female student who was crossing Colfax Avenue near Elizabeth Street just after 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Surveillancevideo shows a gray, four-door sedan barrel through the intersection and strike the student as she crossed the street inside a crosswalk. Police later identfied thecaras a chevyMalibu.Witnesses say the car ran a red light.

"We just heard a 'boom,' turned around, and the girls next to me are like, 'We got to hurry up and call the cops.'" East High School sophomore Kamaree Perkins said.

The victim was seriously injured and taken to the hospital. Denver police say she is in critical condition but stabilizing.

"We just seen this car just switch to the other lane and just keep going; pretty sad," Perkins said.

Police say the student's family is "elated" the suspect turned herself in but they are still traumatized as they wait for their daughter's condition to improve.

Jackson is a recent transplant to Colorado.

Jackson is set to make her first appearance in court Friday morning. Prosecutors are likely to charge her with an updated hit-and-run statute that makes leaving the scene of an accident a class four felony. The legislature toughened the law last year.
