KUSA - Have you ever known a teacher who opened your eyes to a world you hadn't considered before? One volunteer at Stein Elementary School in Lakewood is doing just that with science. Allan Skorpen is the 9Who Care Winner for the month of April.

Skorpen is a retired geophysicist. He wanted to utilize his expertise to help teachers in the classroom.

"I like to be active. I like to learn things. [I've] always been interested in education," Skorpen said.

The teachers at Stein say the students love having him around.

"Oh they just absolutely adore him. When they see him in the hallway, it's 'Hi Mr. Skorpen.' They just can't wait," one science teacher said. "I can kind of give the basics because cause [I'm] just an elementary school teacher. He can always chime in and give us a little bit more in-depth understanding of the science behind what we're learning."

"I didn't like science, but then I was like 'I should join science club.' Then when I joined it, I started liking science and paying attention more," one student said.

One thing that all teachers and students can agree on is that Mr. Skorpen is invaluable to the environment at Stein and a very important part of the Lakewood community.
