DENVER (AP) - A Westminster man convicted of strangling his ex-girlfriend to death has been sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole.

The Denver Post reports Christopher Thomas Mainock was sentenced Friday for the March 2011 death of 20-year-old Sarah Barroga-Hulett. He was convicted in February of murder, kidnapping and sexual assault.

Prosecutors say Mainock used chloroform to subdue Barroga-Hulett and drag her to his vehicle, where he sexually assaulted and strangled her.

His defense team argued he was insane at the time, but jurors disagreed.

District Judge Jill-Ellyn Straus told Mainock on Friday his crime "was the most selfish, callous act that could have occurred."
