KUSA - A lot of folks are worried about losing gardens to the snow.

9NEWS gardening expert Rob Proctor says you can do a lot in just five minutes to save them.

First, bring what you can inside.

Second, toss a towel, tablecloth or sheet over new plantings outside.

Third, dump a little potting soil over plants and flowers just poking from the ground. It'll protect them and they'll just grow right through it eventually.

Fourth, turn Tupperware upside down over lettuce or cabbage.

And - if you have 15 seconds left in your five minute plant rescue, Rob suggests tossing a handful of birdseed out the door.

You want to keep the birds around to eat the insects -- so they don't devour the plants you worked so hard to save.
