LAKEWOOD - Lakewood Police arrested a 19-year-old man accused of starting an apartment firewhich injured residents Friday.

Jalen Berg faces charges including first-degree arson, multiple accounts of attempted murder, child abuse, felony criminal mischief and felony menacing after an investigation found evidence to suggest the Lakewood Estates condominium complex fire was intentionally set.

West Metro fire crews responded to the fire at 5745 West Atlantic Place at 8 p.m. Friday.

Responding crews found unit #305 fully engulfed when they arrived on scene. The entire condominium complex had to be evacuated.

Two people were treated at the complex and two others, including Berg, were hospitalized with minor injuries. Many neighbors, including Stephanie Rook, were outside moments after the fire started.

"I've never seen anything like it, it was the scariest thing ever. There were people laying on the ground and screaming. I think it's horrible," Rook said.

Arson investigators learned that Berg had gotten into a physical fight with his father earlier in the evening at the apartment they both lived in.

Investigators believe Berg intentionally set fire to his apartment in retaliation for the fight he had with his father.

"We did note that it was unusual to have that much fire that quickly. When we got on scene, there were some red flags. When investigators got in there, there were multiple places where the fire had started," Greg Armstrong with West Metro fire said.

After Berg was released from the hospital he was arrested. He is currently being held at the Jefferson County Jail.

Additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.
Berg has a previous criminal record including an arrest for possessing cocaine and methamphetamine.
