KUSA - 9Wants to Know has confirmed investigators are looking into more deaths of patients that may be attributed to powerful pain medication prescribed by Dr. Joel Miller.

Local, state and federal investigators have been working their case against Miller for months. Miller is no longer practicing medicine but ran a family practice office in Craig, Colo. until last year. Craig is west of Steamboat Springs.

A grand jury indicted Miller on 35 counts including health-care fraud, money laundering, illegally dispensing a controlled substance and two counts of illegally dispensing a controlled substance resulting in death.

Investigators have not said how many other patients may have died after receiving prescriptions from Miller.

Miller is set to be in federal court in Grand Junction at 4 p.m. He was arrested Monday.

Prosecutors have told a judge they want Miller held in jail while his case goes through the court system, despite his claims of innocence to the 9Wants to Know investigators.

In an exclusive interview with 9Wants to Know before his arrest, Miller denied he had done anything wrong.

He alleged federal agents with the Justice Department's Drug Enforcement Administration targeted him to drive up their drug-related arrest numbers.
