DENVER BUSINESS JOURNAL - Small business owners are the most optimistic they've been in five years, with more saying they plan to hire in 2014, according to the Wells Fargo/Gallup Small Business Index released Friday.

In a small business survey conducted nationally from Jan. 6-10, the overall score increased to a positive 45 in January, up from a positive 24 in October.

It's the highest score on the survey since the third quarter of 2008, Wells Fargo said, but it's still well below pre-recession levels.

More small business owners polled said they had good cash flow over the past 12 months, with 52 percent reporting improved cash flow in January, compared with 46 percent in October.And 57 percent said they expect to have good cash flow in 2014.

The survey found that 48 percent of small business owners expect their revenue over the next 12 months to increase, compared with 44 percent in the October survey.
