Shaun White has evolved from a red-headed, teenage snowboarding phenom into a global celebrity and action sports icon.

A major marketing power, he has his own clothing line and video game. He remains the premier halfpipe snowboarder in the world. He is the two-time reigning Olympic gold medal winner in the halfpipe and has eight X Games halfpipe gold medals to his name.

He is also among the elite slopestyle competitors, though it is not as strong an event for him as halfpipe. An accomplished skateboarder, White became the first athlete to win medals in both Summer and Winter X Games in 2007.

He usually spends part of the year skateboarding professionally, but took 2013 off to concentrate his training for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Once known for his trademark long red hair, White cut his locks in December, 2012 and donated them to charity, leaving behind the roots of his longtime nickname, "Flying Tomato," and adopting a more polished image.

And all of this success has come after White endured two major heart surgeries before he turned a year old.
