WOMEN'S HALFPIPE FINAL

Wednesday's competition wrapped up in Sochi on a high note for the Americans. U.S. women took two medals in the snowboarding halfpipe finals.

Kaitlyn Farrington of Utah took gold. Kelly Clark, who already has two medals in the sport from 2002 and 2010, added a third medal to her collection Wednesday. She took bronze.

Torah Bright from Australia got silver.

WOMEN'S ALPINE DOWNHILL

The women's alpine downhill race on Wednesday did not go as Team USA hoped. Julia Mancuso of California was expected to be a medal favorite as she had finished among the top racers during training runs earlier this week. On Wednesday, however, Mancuso finished 8th.

This race did make Olympic history as it was the first gold-medal tie in alpine skiing. Tina Maze of Slovenia and Dominique Gisin of Switzerland both won the women's downhill.

The two both finished with a time of 1 minute, 41.57 seconds.

Lara Gut of Switzerland won the bronze medal. Gut was just 10-hundredths of a second behind the leaders.

Stacey Cook of California finished 17th.

NORDIC COMBINED

Todd Lodwick, of Steamboat Springs, Colo., took his ski jump Wednesday and then called it a day. The nordic combined skier decided he would not take part in the 10K portion of Wednesday's event later in the afternoon. He prefers to rest for the large hill 4x5k relay on February 20. This is the sixth winter Olympic Games for Lodwick.

Fellow Steamboat Springs residents, Bryan and Taylor Fletcher, had a tough time in the ski jump portion but finished stronger after the cross-country ski portion.

Bryan finished 26th and Taylor finished 33rd.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY

It was a tough morning for the U.S. women's hockey team in Sochi. The U.S. lost to their Canadian rivals 3-2. It was the American's first loss of the tournament.

This is not the end of the road for the U.S. women's hockey team. It is actually highly likely that the U.S. and Canada could meet again in the gold medal game.

Both teams already earned a bye into the semifinals.

LONG TRACK SPEED SKATING, MEN'S 1000m

Shani Davis was hoping to make history and become the first American to win three gold medals in the same event at three consecutive Olympics. Davis on Wednesday did not even make it to the podium.

Netherlands' Stefan Groothuis claimed gold in the men's 1000 meter. Shani Davis finished 8th.
