BUENA VISTA - US 24 was closed in both directions through Buena Vista Tuesday as bomb squads investigated a potential bomb threat near the Buena Vista Police Department building.

The device was later determined to be a non-explosive "practice round," according to Chaffee County authorities.

According to Chaffee County Sheriff Pete Palmer, a cleaning woman discovered the device around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The device was described as a mortar round with wires coming out of it connected to a cellphone.

El Paso County Bomb Squad was on the scene investigating. A emergency reverse notification was sent to businesses and residents in a 100-yard area of 123 Linderman Avenue in Buena Vista.

All Buena Vista schools were on lockout during the investigation.

US 24 was later reopened after the "all clear" was given.
