KUSA -At last count inAugust,I had over 600 pots--with something growing in each. This probablysounds extreme. Some people have a thing for shoes or cats: I like pots andvests.
The great thing aboutpots is that you can grow almost anything you like in them. You don't have toenvy the gardeners in California or Florida, since you can grow an orange tree,banana or bougainvillea too.
Pots set a tone for yourhome and outdoor living spaces. 600 might be too much of a statement for most,but consider them for groupings or as lone focal points. My pots finallyoverflowed onto my gravel driveway; I didn't really need room forsixcars. Consider using pots to transform a boring or neglected area.
Even withlimited space, most people can enjoy the pleasure of gardening in pots, whetherit's on a windowsill, balcony or patio.Classic terra cotta potsalways look great and fit every style of home. Only the biggest, however, aresuitable for our dry air. Since terra cotta is porous, they dry out quickly.The smaller ones are only appropriate for growing cactus and succulents.
The big trend continuesto be towards glazed clay or ceramic pots. The glaze colors span the rainbow.It's no secret I like the cobalt blue ones. To my mind, every color combinationof flowers and foliage looks great in a blue pot. Glazed pots, as a rule, canusually be left outside all winter. Since they do not absorb moisture, they arenot prone to cracking like terra cotta pots are.
In addition, they holdmoisture better and longer than their terra cotta counterparts.A third option isplastic. With a faux paint job or spray paint, they can blend right in. Theiradvantage is that they are inexpensive, lightweight and hold moisture well. Mysecret is to use them behind my showy glazed pots. Once the sweet potato vinestumble out of them, no one is the wiser.
Go through your potcollection and see what direction you want to go this season. Treat yourself tosome large pots with big "mouths." The wider the pot, the moreopportunities present themselves for stunning floral displays or big vegetableyields.
