DENVER - A 20-year-old man will was sentenced Friday to five years in prison for assaulting an openly gay man in 2013.
Tilo Sandoval was involved in what police called a violent anti-gay assault against Jared Olson as he was leaving a Denver hookah bar in September 2013. Sandoval was out on bond for an assault in July 2013 when the incident occurred.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of menacing in connection with both cases prior to the sentencing.
Denver sheriff deputies had to restrain Sandoval as he was handcuffed and led from the courtroom as he and several family members became visibly upset.
Prosecutors asked for the maximum sentence of nine years, but one of the victims told the court that even though the attack had forever changed his life, he just wanted to move on and wanted the defendant to do the same.
