DENVER - The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has been a roaring success by many measures. It has generated more than $88.5 Million and still growing, and millions have watched the numerous videos and been involved in the fun to raise money for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also called Lou Gehrig's Disease.

This presents a lot of good learning opportunities for you and your business, if handled properly. Here are five lessons that can help you:

1. Make sure the cause is right, timing is right, and it focuses on a positive

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge (#ALSIceBucketChallenge – Twitter hashtag) helped people to laugh and be part of the fun worldwide. Even George W. Bush challenged Bill Clinton, using humor and fun. Doing this during the summer generates more participation than, say, around winter. Donating $25 or $100 to a good cause motivates people to take action. When people have a shared experience with all these good elements combined, it makes for a successful venture.

2. Make it fun and easy

Without the ALS connection, this would be an exercise in futility for most. Doing it for a good cause makes it fun. It is also easy to implement with ice, water and a bucket (and a good change of clothes!).

3. Connect with People

The best challenges cited people by name. This creates a challenge to get key people in a community involved. If they don't, they risk embarrassment from the people who are watching. Make your marketing personal to help people with real problems.
