DENVER – After exactly four months, Dawn Gonzales is not giving up on finding who killed her mother and nephew in an apartment complex at 66th Street and Federal Boulevard in Denver.
"We're just trying to get some answers," Gonzales said. "We need closure, so we could start our grieving process. It's hard to grieve while this person's still free."
50-year-old Rae Lynn Gonzales and 18-month-old Fabian Gonzales were both brutally stabbed on January 3, 2014. Four months later, there are no suspects and no solid leads, according to Dawn Gonzales.
"It's just hard not knowing what happened, who, why? Just why?" she said.
Family and friends of the victims decided to use the 4-month mark and the busy Cinco de Mayo weekend to appeal to as many people as possible on Federal Boulevard. The hope is maybe somebody knows something that will lead to an arrest.
"It could be the smallest of things, but it could be the biggest lead," Gonzales said. "Somebody, the public, the neighbors, somebody knows something."
Greg Dickerson is a relative of the victims, too. He is going from car-to-car handing out flyers that he hopes people will hang around town.
"It's sad that the family has to take this into their own hands and we have to be out here doing this," Dickerson said.
Dickerson says he's angry that little progress has been made in the case.
"How the person, man, or woman or group did this and they're still roaming the streets, It's just beyond my belief." Dickerson said.
Gonzales says it is hard to comprehend why someone would kill her mother and her baby nephew.
"I mean, I'm hanging in there," Gonzales said. "It's hard. It's really hard."
If you know anything about this double murder, please call the Adams County Sheriff's Office or you can leave an anonymous tip at CrimeStoppers (720) 913-STOP (7867). There is a $2,000 reward in the case.
"I'm just praying for that day I get that phone call saying they have a suspect or somebody's in custody," Gonzales said. "I can't wait for that day."
