DENVER – 9Wants to Know has learned a deputy sheriff recently placed on paid leave is being investigated for punching an inmate at the Downtown Denver Detention Center in July.

The incident happened on July 13 while Deputy Sheriff Thomas Ford was in the process of booking a detainee.

Sources close to the investigation tell 9Wants to Know Ford can be seen on jail video punching an inmate in the intake area. The inmate apparently was knocked out.

In a press release, Sheriff Gary Wilson said his office will not release the video nor the inmate's name to protect the integrity of the investigation.

Wilson has asked for the Denver District Attorney's Office to investigate criminal charges against Ford.

Ford has been with the department for six-and-a-half years.

Another officer, identified as 12-year veteran William Lewis, has been placed on investigative leave for allegedly writing an inaccurate report about the incident, according to the news release.
