DENVER - Nearly three years after Marquez Jones was gunned down, a Denver detective is retracing his last steps in hopes of solving the case.
Denver Homicide Detective Tamara Molyneaux says Jones was with three friends the morning of Sept. 18, 2011. They were celebrating a mutual friend's birthday at the Rockstar Lounge at 10th Avenue and Lincoln, and they left just before 2 a.m., heading to their car two blocks away.
"The first confrontation happened just past the intersection at 9th and Lincoln," said Molyneaux, pointing to the outside the Opal restaurant.
The detective describes how a second group of 20 to 30 men were involved in the argument, which escalated to punches in a parking lot. Marquez and his friends tried to leave, but they were chased down an alley.
When the men get near their car, "the fight spill[ed] over to the sidewalk, " Molyneaux said. "There is one shot that's heard."
Marquez was hit in the head.
"Hardest decision of our life to pull the plug, and that's what we did," remembers Marquez's mom, Necole Lowe. She says her son was a happy and funny young man who was working two jobs to provide for his family.
Family, friends and Det. Molyneaux returned to the murder scene Sunday to pass out Crime Stoppers reward fliers. They gave fliers to passersby, put them on cars, and posted them inside businesses. Dozens, if not hundreds, of people saw the killer or some part of the fight that night. The family and investigators hope someone has the courage to call in a tip that may help solve the case.
"Whoever did this should be really ashamed of themselves and should not rest at night because I don't," Necole Lowe said.
Marquez left behind a 10-month-old daughter, Makiah.
"He had her everywhere. He would always sing to her and just throw her up and down he loved her so much," said Kelly Lowe, Marquez's dad.
Marquez's parents want justice mostly for that little girl.
