GREELEY - Katherine Elizabeth Bennett was convicted of three felonies for falsely reporting that she was kidnapped from the parking lot of the Safeway store in Windsor then raped and for destroying evidence.

Bennett, 21, told police an account of what allegedly occurred on Nov. 24, 2013. Her story, which changed several times, was later proven false. She also deleted text messages proving that her initial report was false.

She was charged and convicted by a jury of three felonies: attempt to influence a public servant, a class 4 felony, tampering with physical evidence, a class 6 felony, and solicitation to tamper with physical evidence, a class 6 felony.

Because of her initial report, a Windsor man was arrested for investigation of serious felonies that caused him to lose his job and damaged his reputation in the community. He was not charged, but the hardships due to his arrest and the publicized allegations continued for this young man, who testified that he nearly lost his military career as well because of the false allegations from a woman he considered to be a friend.

Bennett will be sentenced at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 24. The maximum she could face is six years in prison for the Class 4 felony and 18 months for each of the Class 6 felonies.
