COLORADO SPRINGS - A large pit bull was shot and injured by a Colorado Springs Police officer during a call Sunday afternoon.

Around 12:30 p.m. officers responded to a home in the 800 block of East Cimmaron Street to investigate a possible disturbance. While walking up to the residence's rear facing door, investigators say a large pit bull ran aggressively and quickly from the house toward officers.

Due to the dog's aggressive behavior, one officer fired several rounds at the animal. One of the rounds struck the dog in the rear leg, causing the dog to briefly flee toward the house. Officers retreated, but say the dog ran toward them again.

This time, officers managed to close the gate to the yard and hold it shut until the dog's owner contained it to a crate.

During their investigation, officers were unable to develop enough information to arrest anyone in connection with the original disturbance call, however the dog's owner, Patrick Lawrence, was arrested for possessing a dangerous animal.
