KUSA -A well-known anti-gang activistpleaded not guilty in court Monday morning.

TerranceRoberts, is accused of attempted murder. Police say he shot a man during a community rally he organized in Northeast Park Hill.

Roberts told police he was defending himself.

"Not going to take a deal for defending myself on my own property," Roberts told 9NEWS.

He waived his right to hear the charges against him.He was also assigned a public defender.

Roberts next courtappearanceis May 19.
