AURORA - The police chief that led Aurora's response to the theater shooting is close to leaving the department.

The mayor of Miami Beach confirmed to 9NEWS that Aurora Police Chief Daniel Oates is the sole finalist to head the Miami Beach police.

Mayor Philip Levine says the next step is a vote from the city commission, which is expected sometime next week.

Miami Beach is less than a third of the population of Aurora, although it has a lot of tourists to police. According to the Miami Beach police spokeswoman, the department has approximately 380 officers. APD has approximately 669.

The Miami Herald says the Miami Beach PD has been the focus of community scrutiny and embarrassing incidents for years.

Aurora police did not comment Tuesday on Chief Oates' likely departure. 9NEWS has reached out to Chief Oates, but we have yet to get a response. He joined Aurora in 2005. He'd previously spent two decades with the NYPD.
