Documents obtained by KOAA-TV in Colorado Springs, appear to show El Paso Sheriff Terry Maketa had a sexual relationship with the department's comptroller.
KUSA- Newly revealed messages suggest a sexual relationship between the El Paso County Sheriff and one of his subordinates.
Sheriff Terry Maketa has denied accusations that he had inappropriate relationships with three female staffers. However, KOAA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Colorado Springs, said it obtained emails and text messages involving the sheriff and one of those women.
The emails between Sheriff Terry Maketa and the department's comptroller, Dorene Cardarelle, appear to show the two had an emotional and physical relationship.
In emails obtained by KOAA-TV, Cardarelle appears to write back in 2008, "I'm going to curl up with my heating pad. Wish it were you though."
Sheriff Maketa's response: "I wish I was your heating pad."
In another 2008 email, Sheriff Maketa writes to Cardarelle: "My focus is on you!!! Has been since we started talking and even more intense after making love to you…"
So far, the Sheriff, who is married, has denied having inappropriate relationships with subordinates.
On Thursday, though, the El Paso County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to ask Sheriff Maketa to step down.
"We're not saying that somebody is right or wrong; our job is to make sure we provide a functional environment for this community," El Paso County Commissioner Darryl Glenn said.
It is just the latest reaction to the controversy surrounding Sheriff Maketa. Three sheriff's commanders filed a federal EEOC complaint against him, alleging the sheriff mismanaged the department and had several inappropriate relationships with subordinates.
"The legal process will totally take care of what is being alleged out there," El Paso County Commissioner Peggy Littleton saod.
Thursday's vote by El Paso county commissioners was more symbolic than anything else, since Sheriff Maketa is an elected official and they don't have the power to remove him.
Once 9NEWS learned about the emails on Thursday evening, we attempted to reach the sheriff and Dorene Cardarelle for comment, but did not hear back from either one. The sheriff has previously refused to step down.
