Five high school football coaches resigned after a hazing incident involving urine-filled balloons.
CRAIG – Five high school football coaches have resigned from their positions at Moffat County High School in Craig after they were accused of not doing enough to stop a hazing incident.
The alleged incidents happened between June 18 and June 20 at a football camp in Evanston, Wyoming. According to one parent, upperclassmen targeted freshmen boys.
"Five to six to seven of them would do different things to different freshman at different times," said Michele Dugan, whose son was allegedly abused.
Those things, says Dugan, were downright disgusting. The allegations include seniors holding down freshmen and beating them, tossing urine filled balloons at them and attacking them in the shower room.
"One upperclassman did brush his butt on my son. My son went in there with shorts. And [an upperclassman] was just rubbing his butt all over him, and my son said 'please stop. Quit it.' And he didn't. He just kept doing it and doing it," Dugan said.
The students who were apparently victimized told their parents two of the five coaches were around when some of the alleged incidents happened, but the coaches did little to stop them.
"I know for sure if the head coach and the other coaches were in the room, this behavior would have never taken place," Dugan said.
The head coach wasn't there. Even with him not being there, the school still asked him, as well as the four other coaches to resign. They all agreed.
"I believe we have opportunity for our kids to grow and get better, and we're going to look for a new leadership team and go forward," said Brent Curtice, superintendent of the Moffat County School District.
While the district looks for new coaches, it says it's using this incident as an opportunity to move forward and to educate.
"I think clearly we as a district have in our public statement willing to look at things and make changes on the best interest of our kids. Our top priority is safety," Curtice said.
Evanston police and Craig police are investigating the incident.
It's unclear what happened to the students who are accused of hazing.
