DENVER -- A man armed with a rifle and a handgun crashed a stolen SUV through a garage, and then attempted to carjack vehicles on Interstate 70 near Genesee before being tackled by a Jefferson County deputy.

The incident began with a traffic stop at around 2:40 p.m. Wednesday, and played out on Lookout Mountain, along I-70. A man and woman -- identified as a juvenile-- were in a Ford Crown Victoria when a Jefferson County deputy pulled them over.

While the deputy was running the man's driver's license, the couple took off. The deputy did not pursue because it's against police. Thirty minutes later, the couple allegedly carjacked a blue Subaru with at least two victims inside before crashing that vehicle.

At about 4 p.m., the same couple went to a home in the 26000 block of Centennial Trail and stole a white truck while people were home. They crashed the truck shortly thereafter.

At one point, a deputy shot at the suspects. It's not clear if they fired back.

The two fled on foot, running through a wooded area before becoming separated as SKY9 hovered overhead and sheriff's deputies and state troopers flooded into the area.

The woman was taken into custody at about 4:15 p.m. without incident as she walked down a steep dirt hill, and the man tried to steal two dump trucks and a pickup before entering the garage of home in the 2400 block of Rockland Road. He then crashed a silver SUV through the closed garage door before driving several hundred yards and getting stuck in a swampy area.

Carrying the rifle and handgun, the man hopped a fence onto nearby I-70 and tried to stop westbound several vehicles. Deputy Fred Haggett, on a motorcycle, jumped off his bike, drew his weapon and ordered the man to drop his weapons. The man put down the guns but kept backing away from Haggett, approaching one more vehicle before the deputy grabbed him and threw him to the ground. Several motorists got out of their cars to help hold down the man until other police officers could properly restrain him.

The suspect was taken into custody at about 4:20 p.m., authorities say. He could face numerous charges, including aggravated robbery, aggravated motor vehicle theft, burglary and attempted murder.

Reverse 911 calls went out in the area while the suspects were on the loose, a Jefferson County Sheriff's representative says.

The westbound lanes of I-70 at the Genesee Park exit were closed during the arrest.

There were no major injuries reported. The identity of the suspects have not been released.

Witness describes run-in with suspects

For one man this was a case of life imitating art - his own art. Steven Jackson is a crime writer. The female suspect knocked on his door.

She claimed she had been in an accident, begged him for help, claiming her boyfriend was hurt. When Jackson said he was going to call 911 the male suspect rushed to Jackson's door.

"He pulls the rifle up and says 'drop the f---ing phone. Drop the f---ing phone.' And I slam the door and ran away. I don't think I had time to be afraid," Jackson said.

Jackson says the male suspect broke his window with the end of his rifle.
