KUSA - Flooding is a big issue during monsoon season in Colorado, and the American Red Cross is urging people to prepare before the disaster hits so no one is caught off guard.

Patricia Billinger says the best thing about flooding is there is almost always some warning.

She says people should create an evacuation plan. Everyone should know two routes out of their home and have a meeting place in case anyone gets separated.

Preparation also includes having supplies ready to go. Red Cross recommends everybody have a three-day supply of food and water for each person, as well as any important documents, clothes and medication someone might need.

People also need to know how to get information. The Red Cross offers apps for your phone to keep you updated. You can also sign up for emergency alerts to make sure you have the information you need.

"We advise if you see water – standing water or flowing water – turn around; do not drive into those waters," Billinger said.

You never know how fast water is actually moving or how deep it is, so it's best just to steer clear.
