AURORA - An Aurora man who punched a homeless man to death to "teach him a lesson" was convicted of first-degree assault and manslaughter Wednesday.

Authorities say 29-year-old Daniel Rice killed 49-year-old Ricky Thompson after punching him in the head and torso the evening of August 14, 2013.

Thompson was a homeless man who was often seen in the area begging for money.

A witness stated that the Rice said, "Watch this I'm going to teach this guy a lesson. I'm gonna knock this guy out."

The defendant ran across six lanes of a street, cocked his arm back and punched Thompson in the head, and then punched him in the torso. Thompson was defenseless as he was blindsided by the assault. Rice fled after the assault.

According to the Rice, Thompson did nothing to provoke or deserve the attack. The injuries inflicted on the victim resulted in broken ribs and bleeding from the brain. Thompson died as result of a subdural hematoma.
