Denver Police say Guerra was struck by Duran driving a pickup truck at 9:53 p.m. at a scrap metal yard near East 48th Avenue and Washington Street. Guerra was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say they believe the hit-and-run was accidental.

Investigators were able to locate the truck Friday morning and Duran turned himself in later that day. According to police, Guerra asked Duran to help him out in the scrapyard.

Police say it's unclear whether the driver knew he hit a person.

Family in grief and shock

The victim's family said it's more hurtful knowing that a family member is the one involved in the hit-and-run.

"It makes you angry at that person but at the same time confused, because you don't really know what happened," Valentino Guerra, the victim's son, said.

"It's anger for me, because how do you just run over somebody and just leave?" Felisha Guerra, the victim's daughter, said. "You got to make sure your family is OK. why do you just leave?"

As the investigation continues, family members wish they could have had more time. Their time with dad was cut too short.

"He was a good man. He shouldn't have had to die like that," Valentino said.
