DENVER—Responding to Republican efforts to paint him as soft on the terrorist group known as the Islamic State (aka: ISIS, ISIL,) Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colorado) launched a new TV adFriday that touts his determination to defeat the group.
The ad boasts that Udall is "a respected leader on national security" who is "determined to defeat ISIS, with full support of America's airstrikes in Syria and Iraq."
The timing of this ad's release seems to indicate that the campaign is concerned at voters' perceptions of an ad from the Republican National Senatorial Committee, portraying Udall as ignorant of the danger posed by ISIS.
A 9NEWS Truth Testof the NRSC ad determined that it promoted a "deceptive" message by focusing on Udall's belief that ISIS currently lacks the capability to strike on US soil, while ignoring the rest of Udall's answer to a debate question in which he says the group will be a threat to U.S. soil if left to operate unchecked.
The NRSC ad also criticizes Udall for running a "single-issue" campaign focused on women's health issues whilst ignoring national security.
While Udall has addressed national security on the campaign trail, this is the first TV ad his campaign has produced to address the issue.
Udall's ad features some imagery of ISIS militants, interspersed with shots of US naval operations as the narrator discusses airstrikes launched against terrorists.
