DENVER—You can add another former GOP presidential contender to the list of people endorsing former congressman Bob Beauprez in the race for Colorado Governor.

9NEWS is first to report that Gov. Rick Perry (R-Texas) gave his endorsement to Beauprez on Tuesday. This comes on the heels of an endorsement by Mitt Romney, the 2012 GOP presidential nominee.

"Bob is a man of character, faith and vision," Perry said in a written statement. "Coloradans need a strong leader with the experience and the drive to repair the damage done by its current governor. Bob Beauprez is that leader."

Beauprez is still fighting for Republican support in the June 24 primary when GOP voters will choose between him, Secretary of State Scott Gessler, former state Sen. Mike Kopp and former congressman Tom Tancredo.

His campaign hopes that rolling out endorsements from nationally established Republican stars can give him the lift he needs to come away with the nomination.

"I am humbled by Rick Perry's support and friendship," Beauprez said in a statement. "He has proven that states know what's best for their citizens and not the federal government. Rick is a fighter for personal freedom, common sense, business growth and economic prosperity."

Perry dropped out of the 2012 presidential race in January of that year, throwing his support behind Newt Gingrich, who suspended his campaign that May.

In the race for Governor of Colorado, the eventual Republican nominee is expected to face an uphill battle against incumbent Gov. John Hickenlooper (D-Colorado) who has a hefty campaign war chest and no primary challengers to contend with.
