Arapahoe sophomore Tate Schroeder won the 5A singles state championship Saturday at Gates Tennis Center in Denver.

Schroeder beat defending champion Becca Weissmann of Loveland in straight sets (6-4, 6-3). It was a special win for Schroeder who says she struggled with last years loss in the semifinal for a long time.

But Tate said she wasn't doing this for herself. It's been a tough year at Arapahoe after the Warriors lost their classmate Claire Davis in a shooting at the school in December. All of the Warriors wore Davis' initials on their backs and Schroeder had Claire's name on her shoes. After her state championship she paid tribute to Davis.

"This year, my whole goal was to play for God and Claire," said Schroeder, "It hasn't been a self thing for me but it's something I wanted to do for my school this year. They helped us so much and I just wanted to give them something back so they could have their name as Arapahoe on it."
