KUSA - After winning a football state championship in 2009, Heritage High School has struggled to match that level of success. The Eagles record over the last 4 years: 15-25. That led to the unfortunate and controversial firing of head coach Mike Griebel.

In February, Heritage announced the hiring of Tyler Knoblock, an Associate Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator from Oklahoma.

While coaching at Bishop McGuiness, Knoblock helped the Irish to back-to-back semi-final appearances during the 2011-12 seasons, along with achieving academic state titles both years.

When asked about the taking the Eagles job, Knoblock said he kept coming back to Heritage for two reasons. The first was the LPS school system. He and his wife have two younger daughters. The second being the fact that the Eagles have had recent success and the program doesn't need to be built from the ground up.

While the foundation may still be there, it can't be denied that there is a large gap between the level of competition in Colorado and Oklahoma, but Knoblock isn't worried.

"You still have 11 men lining up on the field and have to cross the goal line for a touchdown," Knoblock told 9NEWS while laughing.

The Eagles travel to Florida for their first game of the year against Boynton Beach on Aug. 22.
