KUSA - Hall of Famer and 15-time All Star Tony Gwynn has died at the age of 54. One of the best and most consistent hitters of all time had been on medical leave since March with San Diego State while he recovered from salivary gland cancer treatment.

Just last week, Gwynn signed a one-year contract extension with the Aztecs to continue being their head coach. He had been coaching at his alma matter since 2002.

Gwynn played both baseball and basketball at SDSU and was selected in the 3rd round by the Padres in the 1981 draft.

Gwynn's batting average never went below .309 during a full season and he hit .338 during his 20 years with the Padres thanks to his 3,141 hits. His number 19 has been retired by San Diego.
