In weather befitting a classic East Coast football game, the Denver Pioneers got their first Big East Conference win in school history.
The No. 5 ranked Pioneers beat Rutgers University 17-11 in a snow-filled game at Peter Barton Stadium on Saturday. Freshman Tyler Pace led all scorers with four goals, while Zach Miller and Jack Bobzien both had a hat trick and an assist each. Denver began the second quarter tied 4-4 before going on a six-goal scoring streak to lead the Scarlet Knights 10-5 at halftime.
"Overall it was a good win," said head coach Bill Tierney in an interview with Denverpioneers.com. "It was our first BIG EAST game. Our kids have never seen Rutgers and even though I've played against them during my days at Princeton, this is a whole new team. I'm proud of how this team fought to get the win, considering the weather conditions that we played in."
Denver moves to 8-3 on the season and are tied for first place in the Big East standings. The Pioneers will resume Big East play at Georgetown on Saturday, March 29th, at 9:00am MT.
