In a game that was supposed to be high scoring, the University of Denver Pioneers used gritty defense to get past the North Carolina Tar Heels 9-5 to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

"I couldn't be more proud of this team's performance out there tonight," head coach Bill Tierney told DUPioneers.com. "From offense to defense our guys left it all out on the field and really played a great game. Credit to UNC for really playing us tough and not letting up throughout the game."

Denver's defense was stellar all game long and managed to hold UNC to one goal in the first half. Junior Ryan LaPlante made three saves and allowed only one goal in the first half, while senior teammate Jamie Faus allowed four goals on three saves. Sophomore attack Jack Bobzien led the Pioneers on the offensive end with four points from a goal and three assists.

The Pioneers will await the winner of Penn/Drexel in their second round match-up. That game is schedule for May 11th at 1:00pm MT at Delaware Stadium.
