DENVER - I hope the Broncos draft Michael Sam Saturday.

Not because of Sam's sexuality. I could care less. Not because Sam would help the Broncos win the Super Bowl. He more than likely would not.

Just because it would be an absolute public relations nightmare for the league if the SEC Defensive Player of the Year goes undrafted after publicly coming out following his college career.

Instead of discussing the 256 players that did get selected, all of the focus would be on the one who did not.

The true "football geeks" would understand. Sam is not considered a great pro prospect. He's been labeled too small to play defensive end and too slow to play outside linebacker.

His performance at the scouting combine was poor. But the average NFL fan would not understand how a player who had a great college career couldn't even get a chance at the next level. The non-NFL fans will believe that every team in the league avoided Sam because of his sexual preference and would be outraged.

The Broncos have two picks in the seventh and final round. The team is so loaded with talent that there is a slim chance their seventh round picks will earn a roster spot.

With respected leaders like John Elway in the building and Peyton Manning in the locker room, Sam would receive the type of respect he deserves and a fair opportunity to make the squad.

In fact, I wouldn't be shocked if NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell called Elway and asked for a favor.

"With the 246th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos select..."
