Bringing in the big-name free agents is glamorous and all but head coach John Fox is more focused on the foundation of a team that is annually built in film study and the war room leading up to the NFL Draft.
"The real heart of your team comes through the draft so we'll get the opportunity to draft seven guys. Hopefully we'll draft wisely and they'll do well for us," Fox said.
The successes of this year – and also of years to come - will be attributed to the sometimes stressful selections that take place on April 8th. Because they were able to advance all the way to the Super Bowl, Denver garners the 31st pick in the opening round in exactly a month from Tuesday.
"I don't think you accomplish it all in free agency," the head coach continued. Denver found a way to sign prized free agents defensive end DeMarcus Ware, cornerback Aqib Talib and safety T.J. Ward in a matter of days.
"Free agency is not even done yet. There will still be acquisitions made as we move forward," he continued.
Due to the way the season ended and the quick turnaround in the offseason, Fox and Broncos Vice President John Elway haven't traveled as much to prepare for the draft. Instead, they are doing their homework from the Dove Valley facilities to better the Broncos for the upcoming season.
"Every year you analyze it and it's still early in the process – but I think at wide receiver and defensive back it's a very deep draft and we'll see how it falls for us picking at 31," Fox asserted.
As the evaluation process continues – both in free agency and in the prospects that have just left college – there is a sense of urgency about winning now even as they build a base for the future
