SAN FRANCISCO - Peyton Manning dazzled in two first-half drives for the Broncos in Sunday's preseason game against the 49ers, in what turned out to be a 34-0 rout of one of the top teams in the NFL.
The reigning NFL MVP was 12 for 14 on the afternoon, with 102 yards and a touchdown. The scoring strike occurred in the second quarter, with Manning and tight end Julius Thomas linking up for a 17-yard strike with 11:45 remaining before the half.
"It's been a good start. That's all it is, though," Manning said. "We've still got some things we have to improve on."
Manning looked to be in mid-season form, leading the Broncos on a 12 play, 80-yard scoring drive on their second possession, capped off with the Thomas touchdown.
Manning was 8 for 8 through the air on the drive, while opening the game 4 for 6 for 41 yards including three finds to Demaryius Thomas, who finished with five catches for 37 yards.
He is now 22-27 for 192 yards and a touchdown through the first two games of the preseason in 2014.
A pass from Brock Osweiler to Cody Latimer just before the seven minute mark in the third quarter gave the Broncos a 24-0 lead. Latimer, the 2nd-round pick this year out of Indiana, officially recorded a 33-yard touchdown, the first of his career.
Osweiler finished the game 10 for 13 for 105 yards and the touchdown to Latimer. The Broncos victory also spoiled the debut of the $1.2 billion grand opening of the new Levi's Stadium, which the 49ers will now call home instead of Candlestick Park.
Broncos third-string quarterback Zac Dysert also saw his first action of the preseason, finishing the game 8 for 11 with 63 yards and a touchdown. The second year player out of Miami (0H), found tight end Cameron Morrah for 16-yard pass play with just under three minutes remaining in the contest.
C.J, Anderson led the Denver rushing attack with a touchdown on nine carries for 29 yards.
San Francisco kicker Phil Dawson missed two field goals in the first half. The first from 55 yards and the second from 44 yards.
Colin Kaepernick finished the afternoon 5 for 9 through the air for 39 yards and did not have a rush attempt.
Frank Gore got the start at runningback for San Francisco and finished the day with 12 yards on two carries,
The 49ers are scoreless in their last seven quarters and have been outscored 57-3 this preseason. They lost 23-3 at Baltimore on Aug. 7.
The victory was the third largest in Broncos preseason history, preceded only by a 57-2 win over Seattle in 1976 and a38-0 victory at Green Bay in 1980.
