KUSA - Now we know why Matt Prater hasn't looked like Matt Prater in the preseason, he knew he had a 4 game suspension coming. The Broncos kicker apologized Monday to the Broncos organization for violating the leagues substance abuse policy for alcohol.
"First and foremost I want to apologize to my teammates, coaches, fans, the entire Broncos organization, Coach Fox, and the Bowlen family and especially Joe Ellis for being there for me. I can't thank them enough for everything that they've done for me over the last seven years and I am really sorry. I have made mistakes and I hope to gain everyone's trust back and I am going to work my tail off to try and help us win a championship this year. I take full responsibility for what's happened and I'm accountable for it. It's no one's fault but my own and I am dealing with it, hopefully learn from it and improve as a person and as a football player."
Added John Fox, "There's always disappointment, whether it's an injury or a missed assignment. It's football. In this case, he's part of our family. He's one of ours, and we're going to support him through this."
Prater said he knew he wasn't allowed to drink and was asked why risk it?
"Why did I risk it? I just made a mistake. I don't have an excuse for it, I screwed up, and now I'm paying the price for it."
Prater won't be able to play until the Broncos game in Arizona after the bye week and promises to come back a different person.
"I'm definitely going to make some changes in my life. Not drink at all or risk doing anything stupid like that. Keep myself out of certain situations like not go to places where people are drinking. Now I'm going to dedicate myself to working out and getting stronger in the time I have off. I'm come in here and be here five days a week hitting the weights and I'll have to kick at a high school field."
