KUSA- Avalanche rookie Nathan MacKinnon is very even keeled for an 18-year-old. But at the Avalanche skate around Thursday even he was surprised to see who was chopping at his legs from behind. It was head coach Patrick Roy, picking a playful fight with the young forward.

"We are both pumped up for the game and I guess we were just messing with each other a little bit," MacKinnon said with a smile.

Roy looked to be roughing up the rookie with playful cross checks and pushing MacKinnon into the boards. The rookie got in the last punch though, literally, punching his head coach in the right arm before skating off to finish practice.

"Yeah, maybe I'll just fight Patty tonight… just kidding," MacKinnon said with a laugh after skate around.

Aaron Matas is with the Avalanche in St. Paul, Minnesota and will have live reports on 9News at 4, 5, and 6 pm.
