After two straight wins, and over 6,000 miles of travel, the Rapids probably wouldn't mind if they had a few more games scheduled in Canada.
Thanks to an Edson Buddle goal in the 77th minute, the Colorado Rapids held on to earn three big points in a 1-0 win over Toronto FC. It's the team's first road win against Toronto FC at BMO Stadium, and second consecutive road win in Canada after beating Vancouver 2-1 last week.
"We set out to play a decent brand of soccer," said head coach Pablo Mastroeni . "You come into places with good teams, difficult conditions and it doesn't look like the way you've drawn it out. It's a credit to characters on the field, finding ways to get these results. They've taken that responsibility and really found ways to get results in really difficult places to play."
The two teams played to a 0-0 by halftime, with multiple scoring chances coming from forward Gabriel Torres. The Rapids were able to get on the scoreboard when a loose ball in the box was won by midfielder Dillon Powers. Powers then dribbled to the end line and slipped a drag-pass back to Buddle, who fired home a shot from six yards out. The goal was Buddle's 99th score during his MLS career.
While the victory will look like any other in the standings, Toronto was without its two best players in Jermaine Defoe (hamstring) and Michael Bradley. While the nature of Bradley's condition wasn't explicitly stated, head coach Ryan Nelsen said Bradley was still recovering from last week's appearance for the United States in their game against Mexico.
With or without two of the league's biggest names, the Rapids know they need road wins regardless of circumstances.
"I think their depth was tested today," said Rapids captain Drew Moor. "I'd be lying if I said when we saw the team sheet, that it didn't make us a little more hungry. Obviously the guys that stepped in did well. Toronto is a good team, which makes earning these three points that much tougher and feel that much better."
Colorado will now head home to face the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, April 19th at 4:00pm. The team will then finish up the month of April on the road in Seattle (April 26) against the Sounders.
