DENVER - Safeco Insurance designated June 20 as Drive It Forward Friday, after a study of U.S. drivers revealed motorists are more prone to bad behavior on Fridays during the summer months.

According to a press release from Safeco Insurance, "approximately three-in-10 drivers report they are more likely to engage in a negative driving behavior[s] such as tailgating, using the horn, yelling or gesturing in the summer."

Drivers are 36 percent more likely to engage in bad behavior if a parking spot is stolen, according to the survey.

Moreover, although summer getaway weekends are meant to be relaxing, 29 percent of drivers surveyed said they are likely to engage in aggressive behavior on the way to their destination.

The study advises 72 percent of U.S. drivers were more courteous on designated safe-driving days, like Drive it Forward Fridays. Safeco is asking motorists to tweet #DIFF to raise awareness of the special day.

Safeco recommended several ways to drive safely on Fridays throughout the summer, such as:

  • Model good driving behavior by being friendly and courteous on the road. Your good behavior can inspire others to be courteous as well. Give up a parking spot, and when it's safe to do so, allow other drivers to move into your lane.
  • Accept that some undesirable road conditions, such as heavy traffic, slow drivers or excessively fast ones are a normal and unavoidable reality of driving. If you normalize these irritations, you're less likely to be frustrated by them.
  • Don't take it personally. A driver who cut you off was likely just being thoughtless and didn't intend to anger or endanger you. Consider other explanations; perhaps the driver is traveling to an emergency or simply didn't see you.

Safeco is also inviting people who want to take part in the movement to take a safe driving pledge at www.safeco.com/diff.
