KUSA - Former 9NEWS Traffic Reporter Amelia Earhart is back in Colorado after completing her flight around the world.

She landed in Oakland, California Friday evening, officially completing her journey of a lifetime. She began her flight around the world at the same airport on June 26.

Amelia tweeted Friday evening after touching down: "In the best way we knew how, we brought Amelia's spirit home safely to Oakland."

On Sunday, she returned to Colorado where she was met by a crowd of fans at the Rocky Mountain Metro Airport.

"When we arrived, we were taxiing down the runway and we saw this huge crowd out in front of the Pilatus building," said Earhart. "It just goes to show that the community was really what was behind all of this. So we feel like we took Denver and really the rest of the world around the world with us."

In 1937, aviator Amelia Earhart disappeared over the Pacific Ocean attempting to go around the world. On Friday, modern-day Amelia completed what her namesake could not.

"One of the most special parts of the flight for me was when we handed out flight scholarships over Howland Island," Earhart said. "That was the island where Amelia Earhart intended to land back in 1937 after she departed Papau New Guinea."

While flying over the island, Earhart tweeted out the names of the scholarships recipients. They're for flight training for young girls between the ages of 16 and 18.

Earhart's more than 24,000 trip took 18 days and covered 14 countries. Amelia is now the youngest woman to have traveled around the world in a single-engine plane.

She's now happy to be back in her home state.

"Coming back to Colorado is so neat to see the mountains again," Earhart said. "We, for the most part, were just looking at blue water the whole time so to see the greenery of the mountains as our home state. And we can't wait to have a giant burrito!"
