MOSCA – Few National Parks are as unique as the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. Long before you reach the park's entrance, you'll see towers of sand peering in to the sky.
The largest dunes at the park are about 750 feet tall. The park itself is 149,137 acres.
During the spring months, you'll find Medano Creek flowing alongside the dune's near the park's main parking lot. The creek usually keeps its flow in that area through mid-June.
Several camping sites are available at the park, but there's also San Luis State Park a few miles up the road.
The cost to enter Great Sand Dunes National Park is $3 per person or you can purchase an annual pass for $15.
The drive to the park from Denver is about 4 hours. The best route to take is Highway 285 South then jump on to Highway 17 past Villa Grove.
