In Aurora on Tuesday night, an event was held to help raise funds for a local center: The Comitis Crisis Center.

Twenty-one teams competed in the 2nd Annual Grocery Cart Race at the Safeway on South Havana Street in Aurora.

The event is similar to the old 1960s show, "Supermarket Sweep."

Before the race began, contestants decked out their shopping carts with unique decorations.

"It's a lot of fun and it's for a good cause," Richard Thompson, a participant, said.

Once the race began, participants had to race up and down each isle searching for items.

"Comitis Crisis Center has provided us with their 'food pantry wish list,' which the teams will use as their shopping list. Each team will have five to 10 minutes to make a mad dash through Safeway to 'shop' for items off of the food pantry wish list. The donations the teams have collected will pay for the groceries at the check-out stands," Gayle Jetchik, the executive director of the Havana Business Improvement District, said.

Business owners from the Havana Business Improvement District made up a majority of the participants. They say it's important for them to help those who need help most.

"We understand the economy. We know what's going on, and we need to help out," Thompson said.

The event raised a few thousand dollars for the Comitis Center. Safeway and the Havana Business Improvement District plan to bring the race back next year.
