Pomona claims first-round playoff victory over Poudre

The Impalas dedicated the game to their teammate, Josh Cortez, who died with his mom in a car crash on Thursday.

ARVADA - Pomona High ran away to a 68-27 victory over Poudre on Friday night at the North Area Athletic Complex in the first-round of the 5A CHSAA playoffs.

The fourth-seeded Panthers scored 49 points in the first half.

The win moved Pomona to 9-2 on the season, while the defeat dropped Poudre's record to 6-5. Pomona will play Fairview in the second round of the playoffs.

It was a sad night for the Impalas not just because of the defeat. In their first post-season appearance since 2008, the team was only hours removed from learning of the death of one of their teammates, Josh Cortez.

After a team dinner and celebration on Thursday, Josh and his mom, Kelly, were killed in a car crash. Josh was a junior defensive lineman as well as a member of the wrestling team.

Pomona High School raised more than $1500 for the Cortez family before Friday night's kickoff.
