DENVER - Denver Police say three people were killed Sunday night when their car hit a tree and then rolled. The victims were identified as Brian Alvarez, 20; Bryan Moreno, 18; and Nicasio Flores, 20. All of the victims were from Denver.
The single-car crash happened around 10 p.m. near the intersection of South Irving Street and West Jewell Avenue.
According to police, the vehicle was found resting on the driver's side. They say the vehicle had been traveling southbound on South Irving Street at a high rate of speed, went through the red light at West Jewell Avenue, swerved into the median and hit a tree. There were five men in the car.
"[Flores] always looked out for other people," Flores' friend Paul Lucero said. "[He was a] really nice person. He always cared about other people a lot."
"[He] always put down money for my mom and the family," Flores' sister Blanca said. "[He was] always making sure there was food on the table. I have three other brothers. It's going to be hard without him. It's going to be quiet."
The driver, Alvarez, and the person in the front seat died at the scene. The three men in the back seat were transported to a local hospital. The third person was declared deceased at the hospital. The other two are still in critical condition.
Police say speed was a factor in the crash. Evidence on the scene leads police to believe alcohol was also a contributing factor. Police also believe none of the occupants were wearing seatbelts.
Editor's note: Denver Police initially said the crash was near the intersection of South Irving Street and West Yale Avenue, but later corrected the location.
